SIDEWALK INTERACTIONS

Sidewalk Interactions was a research project exploring interpersonal urban experiences.
We are no longer accepting participants.

Sometimes you have an interaction on the street that makes your day, other times an interaction can ruin your week - what makes one different from another? This study explores some of the factors that may make these moments pleasant or unpleasant for the diverse array of urbanites.
Participants will use a smartphone app to record interactions over a month. As part of the study, participants will be presented with their data and have an opportunity to learn about their own implicit and explicit biases. It is also an opportunity for underrepresented people to voice their urban concerns in a systematic and academic way.

What is a Sidewalk Interaction?

Anytime you have a moment with someone on the street, talking, touching, eye-contact, this is a sidewalk interaction. This study focuses on interactions on sidewalks or in public spaces. If the norm in your city is civil inattention where people normally ignore others, looking up to see their trajectory but looking down and avoiding eye-contact as they pass (Goffman, 1959). A sidewalk interaction is any deviation from civil inattention. When in doubt think about whether another person changed your mood, and take note.
This study also encourages the recording of avoidances or non-interactions as well. Times where you go out of your way to avoid someone or see someone else doing the same to avoid you.
